JOURNAL ENTRY #15 ART STORIES: "Rose Petal, Moth Wings"

JOURNAL ENTRY #15 ART STORIES: "Rose Petal, Moth Wings"

Fun Fact: I was born under a full moon during a huge blizzard. I’m a Winter baby and I thrive in the colder months. I come alive in Spring and am most powerful in the Fall. So what about Summer? Let’s just say...it’s not my forte.

Don’t get me wrong - Summer’s awesome when you’re traveling, laying on a beach sipping cold drinks, dining alfresco, and living your best patio life.

But…

The HEAT.

I just CANNOT.

It. Renders. Me. Useless.

That is until night falls. Summer nights are a little more electric than the rest.

Cotton candy-colored skies give way to darkness that cloaks you in sweet relief. Despite being in their prime during the Summer months, garden blooms aren’t immune to getting scorched by the sun either. You should see my roses right now. Fire engine reds have faded to coral pinks and soft petals have wilted under the heat. Luckily, the night comes to bring them back to life.

In the Summer of 2017, I was painting a portrait - trying to anyway. It wasn’t working, the colors weren’t right, and I wasn’t feeling it. I was in an endless loop of starting, wiping away, then restarting again. I was at it all day and finally walked away by evening. I went outside to take a break and take in the rich colors of the night’s palette. I stopped at the rose bush whose faded hues had returned. At that moment, an idea sparked and I went back to work. “Rose Petal, Moth Wings” was born and in a way, is an ode to Summer nights that restore what is lost in the day. What started as a portrait transformed into a tribute to night’s beauty.

Long revered, the rose is a timeless symbol of love and beauty. I find its contradictory nature of sharp thorns and soft petals most inspiring, and rather, a symbol of harmony - and at night, she comes alive...
