JOURNAL ENTRY #8: ART STORIES - The Floral Drawings

Happy February all!

The groundhog has allegedly predicted the early arrival of Spring, and despite it feeling like Groundhog’s Day every day since last February, I couldn’t be happier! We’re at the halfway point between Winter and Spring and while the ground (beneath 2 feet of snow) may appear barren, I can still sense the stirring of life on its way.

I LOVE Spring, can you tell? New life breaking out from old shells left behind? Yes, please - it’s thrilling and inspiring! It’s Balance & Harmony incarnate. That’s why I love Autumn, too, except that in the Spring the world is washed in jewel-like colors contrasted with earthier, muted colors. It makes my head spin in the best way! I LOVE it so much that gardening became a prevalent practice in the Spring of 2016. In an attempt to preserve the fleeting flourishes, The Floral Drawings Collection began to bloom.

Floating Petals is the first in the series and was inspired by the crocus flower. Always the first to bloom, the crocus punctuates the end of winter with dots of purple exclamation points. I love seeing them contrasted against the white snow. Bouquet, the second in the series, preserves the memory of a sunny April day, picking Spring staples like daffodils and tulips for a flower arrangement. Hydrangeas, the third in the series depicts one of my favorite flowers to grow and draw. Not only are the bouquets dreamy, but each petal detail holds a world of its own.

Gardening and drawing flowers helped my mental health immensely during a time I needed it the most. Gardening gave me something to focus on other than myself and my circumstances and taught me patience, detachment, and hope. When seeds are planted, there’s no guarantee they will grow and you have to be ok with that. It is what it is so there’s no attachment to the outcome but you keep on sowing the ground and tending to the seeds with water and sunlight. These acts keep you hopeful and sometimes you may get rewarded for that in the form of a flower - a symbol of your triumph in a way. The success isn’t the flower itself but all the steps taken to get her out from the darkness and into the light.

In anticipation of Spring and the celebration of the month of LOVE, these ever-lasting bouquets have gotten a makeover, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
